This recipe will show you how to turn green tomatoes into a delicious snack or appetizer. The crispness of the fried tomatoes compliments the chowchow slaw.

  • lb. Green Tomato
  • Wet Ingredients
  • cup Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. Hot Sauce
  • Dry Ingredients
  • cup Fine Yellow Cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 tsp. Whole Black Peppercorn
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • Cooke The Tomato
  • 3 tbsp. Canola Oil
  • 1/8 tsp. Salt
  • 【For The Chow Chow】
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3 cup Vinegar
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 3/4 tsp. Celery Seed
  • tsp. Turmeric Powder
  • tsp. Mustard Seeds
  • 3/4 tsp. Chile Flakes
  • 1 small Yellow Onion
  • 1/2 large Anaheim Pepper
  • 1 small Red Bell Pepper
  • 2 medium Green Tomato
  • 1/2 large Cabbage, Very Finely Shredded
  • 1/4 cup Mustard

Mix hot sauce, buttermilk, and 1T salt in a large bowl, then soak green tomatoes.

In another bowl, mix 1t salt, cornmeal, flour and pepper. Working in batches, shake off excess liquid from tomatoes and dredge in flour mixture.

Let rest on a parchment-lined baking sheet for at least 30 minutes or up to two hours.

In a medium cast iron, heat canola oil over medium-high until a light smoke. Working in batches, fry tomatoes until golden brown on each side (4-5 minutes).

Place on a baking tray and season with salt.

Serve immediately with a side of chowchow.

In a medium saucepot (large enough to fit all ingredients), combine vinegar, sugar, salt, and bring to a boil to dissolve sugar/salt.

Reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half. Add all except yellow mustard. Simmer 15 minutes then add mustard. Cool completely.
