Sour Cream Cake Donuts

  • 2 tbsp Melted Butter
  • ¾ cup Sour Cream
  • ½ tsp Vanilla Extract

  • tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 small Nutmeg
  • [For Rolling the Dough]
  • 2 tbsp Cake Flour
  • 【Doughnut Glaze】
  • 4 tbsp Milk
  • ½ tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar

  • 1 Qt Vegetable Oil

Using the paddle attachment on a stand mixer, whip eggs and sugar to a heavy ribbon. This should take about 5 minutes at a high speed.

With the machine running on low, slowly stream melted butter into batter.

Add sour cream all at once. Mix on medium-high 30 seconds to a minute until uniform.

Whisk dry ingredients together. Then add to batter. Mix just to combine.

Chill dough at least 20 minutes, then roll on a floured surface (I like to use parchment underneath) to ½” thickness.

Put milk and vanilla in a large bowl. Sift 1 cup powdered sugar into liquid, whisking together. Add more powdered sugar, ¼ cup at a time, to desired consistency.

Cut into donut shapes, then put doughnuts and holes on a parchment-lined sheet tray. Store in the fridge until ready to fry.

Fry at 180°C / 350°F until golden brown, 1 ½ to 2 minutes per side, until nice and golden brown.

Remove to a draining rack on a sheet tray or a bowl with a paper towel in it, then toss in sugar immediately or cool slightly and glaze.

Dip donuts or dunk in glaze once they are cooled to room temperature. Allow glaze to harden, 30 minutes to 1 hour.
